Papers of the Edes family include: Richard S. Edes's ms. genealogy of the Cushing, Edes, and May families; Edes's diary about the early lives of his children; papers on his ministry at the First Parish Church in Bolton, Mass.; subject and scripture notes for sermons; and notes on the Bolton school district and on farming. Edes also excerpted from his son Robert's diary descriptions of Port Royal, S.C. and of the Battle of New Orleans, where he served as a Naval doctor. From his son Edward and another soldier, Obed P. Johnson, Edes gathered accounts of the Battle of Chancellorsville, the Gettysburg Campaign, and the daily lives of soldiers in the Massachusetts 33rd Regiment. Letters concerning Edward Edes's final days and the medical care he received prior to his death are also recorded.
